Wrinkles

Wrinkles are one of nature’s indicators of advancing time, but the degree of wrinkles an individual gets also depends on other factors.

Some skin types are more prone to wrinkles and environmental and lifestyle factors also play a huge role in the appearance of our skin as we age. There are many ways of both avoiding and treating excessive wrinkles in men to create more youthful and fresher looking skin.

Wrinkles in men

Wrinkles in men are caused by a combination of the natural ageing process and lifestyle factors.

  • UV exposure is one of the most common damaging factors for skin, in men and in women. Limiting the amount of sunlight that your skin is exposed to is the most effective way of keeping skin youthful and fresh
  • Facial volume is lost over time as fat under the surface of the skin is depleted, leaving the skin to sag and wrinkle
  • Facial expressions repeated over a lifetime cause wrinkles to form in particular areas, such as next to the eyes and corners of the mouth
  • Gravity does its work over time. The weight of your skin under gravity causes lines to form between nose and mouth, and eyelid and cheek drooping
  • Sleep lines come from pressure from your pillow on the underlying structures of the face

Treatments for wrinkles in men

The most appropriate treatments for wrinkles in men depend upon how advanced the problem is, and on the result expected.

  • Botox and fillers are treatments that have become very commonly used by men as well as by younger women. Botox is the injection of botulinum toxin into the facial muscles, making them permanently relax and the skin over them smooth out. The treatment lasts for a few months before needing to be re-done
  • Dermal fillers are used in areas where the face has lost volume, to plump up the skin and remove wrinkles. They last from between four months to two years, and are commonly used in cheeks, lips, brows and eye hollows
  • Simply protecting your skin with a good sunblock and covering up with hats and clothing is the best way to prevent more damage from UV exposure
  • Skin resurfacing treatments can be extremely effective at renewing the surface layer of the skin. These treatments include lasers (such as the Lumenis Ultrapulse fractional carbon dioxide laser), plasma skin regeneration and deep chemical peels. These treatments usually require some recovery time before the effect is evident
  • Surgery is sometimes the most appropriate treatment for wrinkles caused by droop caused by time and gravity, and laxity of underlying muscles. Eyelid reductions, facelifts and brow lifts are common surgical procedures for treating deep wrinkles

Wrinkles may be a symptom of passing time, but they can be minimised by avoiding excessive sun exposure and treated in a variety of ways once they have formed.

Wrinkles

While wrinkles in men are a natural sign of ageing, there are now a variety of treatments that can minimise or even remove wrinkles to leave the skin looking younger and rejuvenated. The treatment of wrinkles makes a huge difference to a man’s appearance, and is no longer only the province of women.
