Ear Reshaping: What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, or ear reshaping, is cosmetic surgery to change how the ears look.

Many people with large or protruding ears find they are self conscious of the look of their ears, or may be teased at school or later in the workplace. Otoplasty is a relatively simple procedure, usually carried out as day surgery, which can re-shape the ears, reduce the size of the ears, or bring the ears closer to the head. After otoplasty surgery, many people with unsightly ears find they are mush happier with their appearance.

How does Ear Reshaping work?

Ear reshaping, or otoplasty, is generally carried out as a day procedure, and usually takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours in the operating theatre. For most ear reshaping procedures, a small cut is made in the skin behind the ear, and the cartilage and skin is trimmed or reshaped to the desired size and shape. The ear is then pinned back into place with sutures. The procedure may be carried out under local or general anaesthesia, although a general is preferred for children.

  • After the operation, there should be minimal pain for the first 24 - 48 hours. The patient will need to wear a head bandage for 1 - 2 weeks, and rest during this time. Sport and strenuous activity should be avoided for 6 - 8 weeks following surgery
  • There may be some swelling and bruising after the operation, but this should disappear over the following few weeks
  • The procedure rarely leaves any visible scars, as the incision is made in the natural crease behind the ear. Any scarring is hidden behind the ear and generally fades with time

The procedure can be carried out on adults or children. For children, an appropriate time for the surgery is around 5 -6 years old, when they will be starting school and will want to avoid the stigma of looking 'different'.

Does Otoplasty have any side effects?

In general, Otoplasty, or ear reshaping, is considered to be quite a safe procedure. Some side effects or complications may occur, such as;

  • Minimal scarring may result from the surgery, but this is hidden behind the crease of the ear and rarely seen
  • In some patients a small amount of bruising or bleeding may occur. This usually fades in the weeks following surgery
  • Very occasionally, a pinned back ear may protrude again. This will require a second operation
  • As the two sides of the head are not identical, two perfectly matching ears may not be obtained

Closely following the surgeon's instructions after the procedure will help to minimise any complications, and of course any problems should be immediately reported to the surgeon.

Why undergo Otoplasty?

Ear reshaping, or Otoplasty, is a surgical procedure which can benefit both adults and children. For those with unsightly, prominent or disfigured ears, undergoing otoplasty can not only improve the overall look and shape of the ear, but vastly increase self-confidence. Children, in particular, can benefit from this cosmetic surgery, giving them the chance to fit in among their schoolmates
