Hair removal for men

Excessive hair can be a health issue as well as an aesthetic problem for some men.

Hair removal treatments are just as necessary for men, particularly in problem areas such as ingrown neck and facial hairs causing bleeding and damage during shaving, as well as for women’s problem areas. New laser treatments are both effective, at least in the medium term, and cause minimum disruption to the skin.

Men’s hair removal

Hair removal in men uses essentially the same techniques as in women. Traditionally, men are not prepared to use ongoing hair removal tactics such as shaving or waxing, so the more long lasting treatment of lasers is most appropriate for men’s body hair removal.

Typically, men need hair removed from areas such as the neck (where hair may become ingrown and cause problems when shaving), as well as the back, chest, legs and eyebrows for shaping.

Laser hair removal for men

Lasers are used for hair removal because the results are longer lasting than other methods. However, no method is truly permanent or truly total.

  • Traditionally, the laser system used was one that contained a few wavelengths of intense light – not a true laser, as these only contain one wavelength. While this was effective at removing hair, it was not as targeted to the job, and some wavelengths caused skin damage also. The treatment used now by top medical cosmetic doctors is a combination of single wavelengths – true lasers, each used for the type of skin and hair it is best suited to
  • Laser hair removal does remove most of the hair, but not all, and several sessions are required to get maximum results
  • Lasers work because the wavelength is attracted to the darker pigmentation in the hairs as compared to the skin. It therefore does not work on very fine, grey, red or blonde hairs
  • Hair removal is long term, up to several years, but not permanent. The lasers can only target existing hair follicles, not new ones which grow in later
  • The number of treatments required varies. Typically, 3 to 8 treatments are required, with a result of a 60% - 80% reduction in hair
  • The cost for each treatment varies depending on the size of the area treated. The chin, for example, costs about one hundred dollars to treat, while a large area like both legs will cost about nine hundred dollars

There are many reasons why men need hair removal treatments, and happily there are now very effective ways of achieving medium term control of hair problems in men.

Technology has now provided some very effective and safe solutions for the problem of unwanted hair for men. Targeted lasers are used by specially trained doctors to create the maximum benefit with very minimal chance of damage to the skin, leaving a satisfactory result that lasts for up to several years.
