Rhinoplasty: Nose Jobs for Men

Rhinoplasty, one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, is surgery to reshape the nose.

A 'nose job' can be undertaken to improve a man’s appearance, boosting self esteem, or to correct inborn defects or breathing difficulties. Through surgery, the nose can be made bigger or smaller, the shape of the tip or the bridge can be changed, the shape or size of the nostrils altered, a hump removed, or a crooked outline straightened.

How does Rhinoplasty work?

Before undergoing a nose reshaping, the patient will be given either a local, or more commonly, a general anaesthesia. For minor alterations, closed rhinoplasty is performed. This involves the surgeon making incisions inside the nostrils, separating the skin from the cartilage and bone. The underlying structures are reshaped and the skin repositioned over them, resulting in a neat and pleasing appearance. Major changes require an open rhinoplasty. An incision is made in the base of the nose, between the nostrils, and the cartilage and bone moulded to the required shape. Sometimes, cartilage grafts from the ears or ribs may be used to reshape the nose.
Rhinoplasty generally takes 1 - 2 hours, and usually requires an overnight stay in hospital. Those best suited for this surgery will be healthy, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations of the outcome.
Rhinoplasty is best performed once the nose has stopped growing, generally around 16 for girls and 17 for boys.

What are the risks of Rhinoplasty?

Like any surgical procedure, nose reshaping has some risks, such as;

  • Infection rarely occurs. In fact, less than 1 % of cases will become infected, and antibiotics are readily administered
  • Bleeding normally occurs during and immediately after the operation, however a blood clot may occur. This will require a return to the surgical theatre
  • The tear ducts of the eye may be damaged during surgery
  • Meningitis - infection of the cranial (brain) cavity - is a rare complication
  • The skin on the nose and face may be affected by the splint and tape used. This will rapidly clear up
  • Broken capillaries or thread veins on the nose
  • Boney lumps and bumps may occur due to the re-shaping of bone and cartilage
  • Nasal obstruction is rare and is due to a decrease in the nasal airway, usually temporary
  • Damaged columella (the skin between the nostrils) which will require further surgery
  • Dark circles under the eyes may occur

For most people, nose re-shaping surgery will give the desired result with minimum problems.

Non Surgical Options

New methods use dermal fillers to make subtle changes to the shape or size of the nose without the need for surgery.
Non surgical methods usually require no recovery time, need no general anaesthetic, and carry little risk. They are a quick and affordable option for those wanting to change the shape of their nose without surgery.

Rhinoplasty for men

Rhinoplasty is a procedure commonly used to re-shape, re-build and improve the shape and function of the nose. For some it is necessary for health and comfort, for many others, nose reshaping offers a much needed boost to their self esteem. Altering the size, shape and outline of a nose to better fit the face can improve the happiness and confidence of many people, especially teenagers.
