Common Mens skin problems
Your skin is one of your most important organs, as it covers your body in a protective and attractive layer.
Men are certainly not exempt from skin problems, which can occur as a result of exposure to chemicals or the sun, dietary problems (dairy and wheat are common culprits), or simply be a result of your genetic inheritance. Treating common skin problems in men is now a common and important process.
What are some common skin problems in men?
The most common skin problems in men are much the same as those in women, and can be treated from a wide range of options.
- Acne and acne scarring is a particularly significant problem in men, as it is related to the presence of hormones such as testosterone, which are present in higher levels in men than in women. Acne treatment ranges from over the counter skin creams and washes, to medications to control and balance hormones and chemical skin peels, which can be particularly effective at renewing the skin surface
- Pigmentation is the appearance of coloured patches on the skin. These birthmarks may appear anywhere on the skin, but marks on the face are usually the most likely to be treated. Brown marks are the result of excessive melanin (skin pigment), and can be treated with lasers or lightening creams. Red coloured marks result from malformation of the blood vessels under the skin, and can be effectively treated with lasers
- Excessively oily skin is caused by over production of sebum, the skin’s natural moisturiser and protector, by glands under the surface of the skin. It can be caused by hormonal imbalances, or simply genetics. Often oily areas alternate with normal or dry areas. Eating foods containing zinc, vitamins and minerals and amino acids will help, as will using skin products targeted at this problem, such as the ASAP range
- Skin lesions can be caused by disease or injury to the skin, and are treated according to their cause (by removing the cause), and when healed by skin peels or laser treatments to reduce the appearance of lesions
- Rosacea is a common skin problem in men, characterised by redness of the skin, particularly in patches on the face. It can be kept at bay with medical grade skin treatments, and laser treatments
- Scarring, particularly on the face, can be disfiguring and even uncomfortable. Keloid scarring occurs outside the boundaries of the original injury and doesn’t improve, while hypertrophic scarring does improve and occurs within the injury boundaries. Scar treatments range from surgery (only for hypertrophic scars), cryotherapy (freezing), laser treatments, injections of a chemical commonly used in chemotherapy, corticosteroids, or laser therapy
These, and other common skin problems in men can be treated as successfully and as easily as the same problems in women, and consulting experts in the field is always an excellent first step.
Men and skin problems
No longer is it necessary for men to suffer with untreated skin problems. The skin is one of the body’s most vital protective organs, and treating problems with it is important. Men suffering from these or any of a range of other common skin problems should seek the advice and assistance of professional cosmetic and medical experts for the best results.
